On August 6, 1897, the Demeter, a merchant ship, mysteriously washes shoreward in England. The wreckage includes Captain Eliot's carefully maintained ship's log. A month earlier, the Demeter docks in Varna, Bulgaria, to load shipment for London ᅳ huge wooden crates dealt carefully by local people from Romania. Notwithstanding suspicion, the crew acknowledges the freight and sets sail. Clemens, a doctor from the Cambridge college, joins subsequently to save Eliot’s grandson from a falling carton. Unbeknownst to them, a crate uncovers Anna, scarcely alive, provoking Clemens to give life-saving blood transfusions. As the Demeter sails, mysterious events disrupt the crew, including animal butchers attributed to an apparent rabies flare-up. Toby, Eliot's grandson, is bitten and dies notwithstanding Clemens' all out efforts. Captain Eliot and others surrender to Dracula's assaults. Anna sacrifices herself, overcoming Dracula momentarily. The Demeter steers into the rocks on the English coast, and Dracula appears from the wreckage. Anna, confronting transformation, immolates herself in the dawn. Clemens, vexed by memories, in search of Dracula reports to London. Clemens, overwhelmed by the echoes of past, encounters Dracula in London, ironically promising a future retribution in a tense moment.

“Last Voyage of the demeter” Review

The Last Journey of the Demeter is a 2023 American thriller directed by André Øvredal and adapted from Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. The story revolves around the doomed crew of the ship Demeter, steered by Captain Elliot, as they journey from Transylvania to London while being pursued by Dracula.

Development of the film started with Bragi F. Schut Jr’s. script, motivated by a partner’s model of the Demeter. However, the project confronted various setbacks for two decades until Amblin Partners acquired the rights in 2019, with Øvredal joined to direct.

Main photography occurred in Berlin and Malta, with extra scenes recorded in Mdina. Released on August 11, 2023, the film received mixed reviews and failed to meet expectations in the box office, grossing $21.7 million overall against a $45 million financial budget.

The plot follows the crew’s excursion from Bulgaria to London, transporting mysterious cargo. Among the crew is Clemens, a doctor who reveals a lady buried in one of the cargo crates. As uneasiness rise and crew members are attacked, it was revealed that Dracula is on board, feeding on them.

The film’s climax sees Dracula killing several crew members, including Captain Elliot, prior to being defeated by Clemens and Anna. Notwithstanding their triumph, Anna reveals she is transforming into a vampire and sacrifices herself as Clemens vows to hunt down Dracula.

The cast includes Corey Hawkins as Clemens, Aisling Franciosi as Anna, Liam Cunningham as Captain Eliot, and David Dastmalchian as Wojchek. Critics praised the film’s environment and suspense, yet criticized its pacing and lack of creativity. Some highlighted the performances and direction, while others felt the screenplay missed the mark in conveying a convincing story.
