Space horror in a new chapter
“Alien: ”Alien: Romulus” (2024) is the seventh chapter in the cult series of films ‘Alien’ and is directed by Fede Álvarez while the script co-writer is Rodo Sayagues. This space science horror film is placed between the two mentioned films yet again offers a new story that follows its base. It features Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu and revolves around a group of space colonial teens who accidently wake up alien predators while boarding a derelict space station for scrap.
Plot Summary
The film begins with a Weyland-Yutani probe that arrived at the wreckage of the USCSS Nostromo in space that it discovered an organic space that had a xenomorph. Collecting cryostasis chambers from a wrecked space ship on the mission of evacuation to the planet Yvaga is the purpose of the main character, Rain Carradine, an orphan who is a miner. Together with her new adoptive brother Andy, a reprogrammed android, and a group of comrades, they are threatened by facehuggers revived from one of the clones, out of control androids, and xenomorphs that evolve into new forms.
The last survivors on the space station in which it is heading towards collision with a certain planet’s rings, end up to face betrayal, stabbing like deaths, and appearance of the unpleasant xenomorph-human being half-breed creature. The climax revolves around a race against time which see Rain a minority escaping the wreckage while suffering, from a major tragedy of losing her allies.
Character Spotlight
Rain is played by Cailee Spaeny who gives a solid performance to a character who suddenly finds herself in come impossible situation. David Jonsson provides star performance as the moral ambivalent protagonist Andy, the android whose allegiances are anything but fixed. Other members of the cast include Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu; the supporting characters all have their own conflicts and reasons for their actions.

“Alien: Romulus” is an important entry on the franchise; Fede Álvarez was given direction of the movie after he sold his vision to 20th Century Fox. Principal photography began on March 10, 2023, in Budapest and wrapped in July of the same year, with extensive use of practical effects and the films director’s insistence on the esthetic coherence of the previous films in the series. To maintain continuity and work on the novelties, Álvarez consulted Ridley Scott and James Cameron, the directors of the previous parts. For instance, the movie is linked with all the previous five Alien films, especially with “Alien” and “Prometheus”.

Box Office Triumph
Commercial Success”Alien: The show “Romulus” did quite well at the box office to yield $118. Around the globe it sold 7 million copies in its first week of release. During its opening weekend in the United States and Canada it performed even better than expected, becoming the second biggest opening in the franchise. Domestically the film also found success with audiences, and especially so in China.
Reception
The film was well appreciated with critics and it has a rating of 81% on the website Rotten Tomatoes. Praising Spaeny, its visual texture, atmosphere of tight space, some critics called it the best of series since ‘Aliens’, Others complained of slow pace and inconsistent character development. It was particularly questionable to bring Rook back in this manner due to the fact that the actor Ian Holm who portrayed him had passed on: The decision of this course of action was met with quite a deal of criticism and perceived as a mere miscalculation, and at best, a highly questionable and insensitive gesture.

“Alien: Romulus” is one of the finest reboots of the Alien franchise as it tries to present the best of both worlds and succeed in that attempt.
